The GIMP 2.6.4

GIMP is a very popular on Linux. This is an excellent software that allows you to make photo editing operations to perform any type of image manipulation.
The possibilities offered by the GIMP can be compared to those of commercial software such as Photoshop or CorelDraw.
Since it is a software originally developed for the Linux platform, it is possible that Windows is still having some problems. however, the program deserves to be thoroughly tested for completely free.
If you have installed on your system an earlier version of GIMP, make sure you completely uninstall it before installing the new switch.

RIOT (Radical Image Optimization Tool)

It's a program that allows us to reduce the space occupied by an image, for example if we post on the Web, this is not to use strange formats (actually, you can upload images of many formats), or specific algorithms compression, but tries to let us use the best tools we already have.

For example, we have an image in JPEG 4MB of which we can minimize the space to put it on the Web via the GUI RIOT we will see how we're going to compress the image further, trying to Jpeg compression up (but also trying to exclude extraneous data as EXIF profile, comments, etc.).. The initial and final size of the image are written very clearly, so very easy to make a comparison.

RIOT tries to do his best not only lossy graphic formats, just like JPEG, but also non-lossy formats such as GIF and PNG.

Compress the image if there is sufficient, you can also resize it with good algorithms (Catmull Rom, Lanczos and some others): here, the advantage is that we can see the initial and final images side by side and easily decide if the quality of chosen algorithm satisfies us.

RIOT is also in portable version (no installation required).

GimpShop

It a version of the open source GIMP image editor that has changed the GUI to make it as close as possible to that of Adobe PhotoShop. Photoshop plugins are not supported, but those are the GIMP (which fortunately there are many) also tutorials for the GIMP are almost the same, only to be adapted to different graphical interface.

For the rest, the same things said by Gimp: that is an image editor filters and rich in potential, which can also be used for commercial purposes.

GimpShop

SmillaEnlarger

It an open source portable (no installation required) that allows you to enlarge images.

In theory, the magnification of images is a feature supported by all graphic programs (such as GIMP, Paint.net, etc.). SmillaEnlarger but uses a proprietary algorithm, which should ensure better results.

Apparently it is easy to use, since you can enlarge photos or images automatically without touching any parameters. However, the results are not exceptional in this mode (they are practically the same as in any graphics program) if we want something more we need to go to set the parameters manually. In this case the results of Smilla Enlarger are slightly better, although at the cost of effort (and number of attempts) much greater.

Overall I think SmillaEnlarger is an interesting, but still has considerable room for improvement.

FotoSketcher

It's a program that lets you turn photos into cartoons and drawings, both black and white or color.

There are many different styles of design, from charcoal to watercolors. To make something nice with FotoSketcher, should do a little practice. By trying different types of photographs, I found that works best with small details (such as boats, architectural elements, etc..) Than with faces or human figures.

Many of the color results are nothing special (in fact some have already tried similar functionality in professional programs such as Adobe PhotoShop, and have seen how difficult it is to sound design really a drawing and not a doctored photo), but the transformation in black-and-in many cases very beautiful, and most importantly it is easier to get good results with respect to color processing.

When I say easier, does not mean that FotoSketcher is a program difficult to use (it is really easy), as that required fewer attempts (compared to default parameters) to obtain a successful result.

Comical

Comical is a good open source program (there is not only Windows but also Linux and Mac) can display on your computer CBR and CBZ comic book format.

And 'maybe some' slower than in showing CDisplay comics consist of many pages (not so instantaneous loading), it allows you to read the next page simply by double clicking the mouse (or should use the keyboard or click with the mouse on the symbol or not), but the same error.

The quality of the adaptation of page to screen is excellent, so you can choose between several algorithms to reduce, by View-> Image Filter (some are faster, as Bilinear, but display the page more blurred, while others, such as Catmull- Roma are slower, but view the page in a more incisive and brilliant).

Comical

CDisplayEx

Open source is a kind of CDisplay rewritten from scratch (and made just open source). Search it to resemble as closely as possible CDisplay, even in the GUI.
And course, possible, like all programs in this category, view two facing pages, so as close as possible to reading a comic paper (you can switch from one page to another with a double click, right as CDisplay).

Pictomio

It an image viewer who depends on the graphics, but it does so beautifully. In fact not even remotely supports all image formats in IrfanView and FastStone Image Viewer, and even has features to edit images in bulk (batch) of these two programs (and even of XnView, actually), and of Furthermore it has also considerable hardware needs ... However ... image display is absolutely spectacular, thanks to the 3D mode really well done (in some ways reminiscent of the best things of Visions). You should look at the pictures on your computer only to see it work ...

It also possible to rate the individual images and affix annotations (in order to catalog them better), and create slideshows quite spectacular.

Really nice (I still remember that the hardware requirements are significant, we need a recent PC otherwise it is useless).

PDF X-Change Viewer (Create and convert PDF files)

Over the years, PDF X-Change Viewer has become my favorite program to view PDF documents.

Maybe not as fast and lightweight Foxit Reader, but they have other outstanding qualities, including a beautiful graphical interface (the best of the class, in my opinion), the usual ability to zoom or rotate pages, and possibility of making notes colored and clearly visible (or comments, or similar) across the text, or underline or highlight the same, just as if we had a marker (provided that the text of the PDF has been recognized with an OCR, or come from Word documents, etc.)..

It can also convert the pages of a PDF document into individual images (GIF, PNG, JPG, etc..), Which very rarely a free PDF viewing permits.

PDF X-Change Viewer You can use it free for personal and commercial.

FastStone Image Viewer (View pictures and photographs)

Another great program to view images. Unfortunately, there are categories where the good free programs are virtually absent and others, like this display of images, where we even have three free programs at the highest level.

It can also add any text or watermarks to images, and apply other small effects. The image processing block (batch) is good, perhaps not even in XnView, but still more than valid. The stability is excellent, very rarely is a program that crashes, even when under pressure.

Watching carefully, I notice that you are inspired directly to the functions and features of Irfanview trying to improve them. The only thing that remains Irfanview is probably higher as many formats supported (directly or through plugins).

Virtual Dub

It's the most popular open source program can split and combine video clips, and more. By Virtual Dub were learned many other programs, including VDM (which in years past I used to almost all video guides hitfreeware.com).

The characteristics are similar to those of VDM, the major difference that Virtual Dub is still constantly updated.

K-Lite codec Pack (encoding and decoding)

And codec pack, probably the most popular by far (it is known for many years now). It should be careful when you install it, and pay attention to unnecessary codecs, because they are rare cases of conflicts between codecs. Remember that the version of the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative.

If you can, I suggest you use Vista Codec Package or Divx Total Pack, which created fewer conflicts; I suggest K-Lite Codec Pack if you need codecs rare and rare.

Vista Codec Package

And codec pack ready for Windows Vista and XP. Codecs are installed directly, but are not touched any preferences or pre-existing associations, so as to have the least possible impact on the system.

One of the major advantages of this package is that the codecs are already configured to work immediately without any user intervention.
It can also install/uninstalling codecs without touching each other. To avoid conflicts, are automatically removed before installing any other similar codec packs.
