The MKV is not a format but a container (like avi). The interior can accommodate many different codecs such as Xvid, Divx, H264, AAC, etc..For viewing movies. Mkv, which in recent times seem to spread more and more (and increasingly will spread, given the increasing number of HD video at 720p or 1080p high definition TV and Blu-Ray) is need the Matroska Pack, or a video player that supports this format natively or container.
