H.264/AVC is the video compression codec (paid) last generation, the one with which you perform best (meaning both in terms of compression of the final quality). Is also becoming the compression format of high definition (HD), intended as TV and Blu-Ray.Unfortunately, the official version of the codec is shareware (already used in a variety of recoding programs, including Nero), but there is a free version (in fact, open source also) called x.264, which can be used for encoding / decoding. In some open source video editing programs such as Avidemux, this codec is already integrated and can be used like any other codec (as a video created with it is currently not compatible with divx players table), is also already integrated in some media players like VLC or more.
